Navigating the Grocery Store 

I did a grocery store tour with Ericka Flye for Heart Month. It was great opportunity to go around the grocery store and look at heart healthy options. All of go to the grocery on a weekly basis, but picking healthy options can be a challenge. February is National Heart Month and I was excited to do this as a spokesperson for the American Heart Association and with St Vincent Health. 

New Year's Resolutions

Spoke with Lauren Casey about putting together goals for the New Year. Lots of us write resolutions, but often we don't end up keeping them. Being able to set goals and actually stick with them is important and here are some tips and recommendations on how you can reach those goals. Make sure you write down what you what to accomplish and then tell a friend to help hold you accountable to that goal you have set for yourself. 

Burning Off Those Thanksgiving Calories

Interview with Candice Aviles about calories and ways to be healthy during Thanksgiving. Doing some simple household chores can burn a few calories and can help you keep active during your holiday festivities. Even washing the dishes will burn a few calories. Trying to stay active and move around is a good goal, instead of just sitting on the coach.

The Truth about Saturated Fats 

Interview with Jade Hindmon about a new study from Harvard about saturated fats. Dr. Frank Hu, PhD conducted a study that looked at what food items people replace saturated fat with when they try to remove it from their diet. He found the most heart healthy options are to replace the saturated fat with poly and monounsaturated fats. This reduced coronary heart disease by 25% and 15% respectively.

Walking and Diabetes 

Interview with Eric Cox about finding ways to walk more and that helps everyone, but especially people with diabetes. Getting up a moving more is key to be healthy. This can be walking for a total of 30 minutes each day (aiming for 5 days a week). You don't have to walk the whole 30 minutes at one time, you can split it up through out the day.

Non-GMO Infant Formula 

Interview with Ericka Flye about news released on May 26th that Similac was making their term infant formula, Similac Advance in with Non-GMO (Non-Genetically Modified Organisms) soy ingredients. This is the first non-organic formula that is being altered to not contain GMOs. Similac did release a statement on their website addressing this change - CLICK HERE. For the consumer, there is no difference in the nutritional value of the Similac Advance Non-GMO formula. This change has occurred due to consumer request. GMOs are regulated by the FDA and are seen as safe for infant consumption.
